What Is IAM and Are You Eating My Cheese?

This two-part presentation explores what Identity and Access Management (IAM) is and how it supports the institution by enabling electronic resources to leverage IAM and keep its data secure.
In Part 1, we’ll provide an overview of IAM fundamentals and how these services interface with the broader community. From identity provisioning and access controls to single sign-on, multi-factor authentication (MFA), and modern authentication technologies—we’ll discuss our goal of securing access while staying out of the way of the real work being done across the institution.
Part 2 shifts focus to current project updates, including our transition from Duo to Microsoft Authenticator, the planned retirement of SMS-based MFA, and our strategic investment in governance. We’ll highlight how we’re using policy and process improvements to tackle long-standing identity lifecycle challenges and reduce user friction moving forward.
