Uncommon Common Sense: Privacy Edition

Tags: , , ,
Privacy may seem like a maze of legal jargon and technical rules, but at its core, it’s about good old-fashioned common sense. In this session, we’ll boldly go where many professionals hesitate, the gray areas where “common sense” doesn’t always align with data practices. Through real-world scenarios and a touch of Starfleet wisdom, we’ll explore surprising pitfalls, myths, and everyday “oops” moments, from oversharing on collaboration tools to mishandling sensitive data in research. We’ll also look at modern misconceptions, like assuming “incognito mode” means invisible browsing or inviting an AI transcription tool into a meeting without considering where that data may end up. Along the way, we’ll uncover blind spots, such as treating privacy as someone else’s responsibility or trusting that technology always has safeguards built in. Attendees will leave with simple, practical strategies to reinforce their systems, protect personal information, and help their crew (and their data) live long and prosper; no law degree required.
