    • Building a Safer Campus: Collaborative Cybersecurity Training for Students
Isaac Galvan, Technology Services; Milind Basole, Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning
By many measures, our campus’s security culture is solid among our university’s faculty and staff; however, online scammers and cybercriminals continue to pursue our students relentlessly. Technology Services and CITL have recently partnered to address the need for creating awareness and cybersecurity training directed at students utilizing CITL’s eText@Illinois platform. Slated for launch in Fall 2023, “Cybersafety and You” (working title) will engage students via relatable scenarios and lead Illinois students to make prudent choices by simulating real-life decisions, deferred decisions, and their consequences. Each module will end with actionable items students can quickly implement to secure their devices and better protect themselves, their identity, and their future. “Cybersafety and You” is part of CITL’s new literacies series. eText@Illinois is an accessible, interactive, multimedia-enriched content delivery platform created at and for the University of Illinois.

    • Grading Online: Challenges and Strategies
      Dan Hahn, Technology Services
The Assignments tool in Canvas enables teachers collect and grade homework online, but are teachers making the best use of this tool, and more importantly, their precious time? IT Professionals typically do not understand the tools that teachers must use in order to assign and grade homework online. Similarly, most IT Professionals are not familiar with pedagogical best practices as they have been discussed in the academic literature. This presentation examines best practices and lessons learned from two academic papers and highlights the major points and considerations in our modern environment. These academic papers pertain to grading writing assignments specifically; however, the lessons do apply broadly across disciplines and LMSs. These best practices will help inform the advice you give to faculty on how to use the LMS to save time and be more effective with their on-line grading.

    • Easy-Up Conference and Research Team Websites with Publish.Illinois.edu
Dena Strong, Technology Services; Robert Slater, Technology Services
While the process of creating a publish.illinois.edu namespace takes about 5 minutes, the process of getting a website built from scratch takes more time and effort, and not all our customers are familiar with the WordPress Block Editor. In order to simplify site creation, we’ve developed two basic site templates – one designed for a professor or research lab team, the other for a conference. Either of these can be installed when you first create a publish.illinois.edu site, and the how-to documentation is built into the sample pages, so that your guidance is right there. (Even after you’ve edited your sample pages, you can still find the instructions at https://publish.illinois.edu/template-site and https://publish.illinois.edu/template-conference .) Join us for a look at how to make and modify these easy-up sites. If time permits, we may have a bonus feature as well.
